Hybrid BMW Review -

One of our team currently drives the BMW 225Xe, a plugin hybrid. She’s given us a bit of feedback on how she’s been getting on with it.

“This is my first hybrid car and so far, so good! Neither my husband or I have a long commute to work and do a fair bit of town driving of 15 to 20-mile round trips so although the BMW’s electric range on full charge is only between 16 and 18 miles, it’s enough for us.

"We have an outside socket so charging it up is easy – I’ve read stories about people not bothering to plug their hybrid in but we do it religiously, whenever we park. It takes seconds and whilst it needs a good few hours for a full charge, it will gain a few miles more electric power with just a short (couple of hours) plug in.”

“ I like the flexibility of being able to switch modes too. For example, if I’m on a dual carriageway I tend to choose “auto drive” so if I need to put my foot down to overtake, the car will switch to petrol and has a bit more power. There’s also a “save” mode which uses petrol only, when in this mode the battery is also recharged so if we’re on a longer journey we’ll use “save” on the motorway and then flip to electric when we’re in a town or village. We have the M Sport model – it has a sport mode but we’ve only used this option once or twice – it definitely gave the car a bit of extra ‘oomph.’  The full leather interior is attractive and the infotainment system is pretty good too. ”

“As the first hybrid I’ve ever driven I would say it’s been a great introduction to the technology and I absolutely want to look into driving a fully electric vehicle in the future. Longer road trips are only a couple of times a year occurrence and I’m confident that with the charging network increasing across the UK, we could make it work.”

“One barrier for my family at the moment is space – we have two teenagers and two dogs so we need good passenger leg room and a decent sized boot. Currently it seems that smaller EV’s are being introduced at a pace (I’d love the Mini electric but it’s just not big enough) but there are less estate / large cars – unless you’ve got a big budget. I’ll be really interested to see what is launched by the manufacturers in 2020 and 2021.”

“Overall, I’m a definite alternative fuel fan.”
