For a lot of dog owners, taking them in the car is something that will happen fairly often.
But did you know that if the animal is not secured properly you could be fined up to £2,500?
And this doesn't just apply to dogs either.
Rule 57 of the Highway Code states When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly.
Tips to ensure your pet is safe in your car
1. Don't allow your pet to hang his or her head out of the window (as much as they may love it and as cute as it may look!) It's potentially dangerous and can cause injury.
2. If in the back seat of the car, invest in a pet seatbelt to ensure he or she is suitably restrained.
3. If in the boot, use a pet carrier or crate or invest in a guard to ensure the dog cannot jump over onto the back seats
4. It's not only dogs, if you're transporting your cat or other small animal ensure it is in a carrier and secure in the footwell or boot.
5. When travelling with pets always carry a large water bottle in case your pet overheats and needs to be rapidly cooled in an emergency.
6. Use sun shades on the windows when it is hot and use the air conditioning to keep the car cool
7. NEVER leave your pet in the car alone.
8. Avoid feeding your pet within two hours of starting a long car journey - pets can get travel sick too!
9. Pack a favourite toy or blanket for comfort and familiarity.
10. Take regular rest stops to allow your pet to relieve itself, have a drink and stretch it's legs. Remember to keep your pet under control at all times and never let your pet out on the roadside or hard shoulder.
