Driving in hot weather - tips from Little Green Car Leasing

Oh how we love a heatwave…..now as it’s the UK, chances are by the time you read this we’ll be back in our rain coats but the Little Green Car likes to be optimisitc!!

So here’s our advice on staying safe in hot weather on the roads.

Plan your journey

Plan your route in advance and don’t forget to include breaks if you’re taking a long journey.

Cool down

As much as we warm our cars up in the winter before setting off, in the summer you should cool down. Crank up the air conditioning before you hit the road so your journey is comfortable from the off

Think about your choice of clothing

As the interior of your car can get very warm, make sure you wear clothes that will keep you as cool as possible and think about your footwear. There is no law on what to wear on your feet but bare foot, flip flops or loose sandles can affect how much control you have over your vehicle.

Prevent drowsiness

Keep well hydrated when driving in hot weather and it is extremely important that you check any hayfever medication to ensure your driving ability won’t be affected. If in doubt, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

Find a shady spot to park

The interior of your vehicle can get very hot in the summer, especially if the seats are leather or plastic. Keep your vehicle well-ventilated and try to park in a shady spot to prevent both the interior and engine of your car overheating.

Be careful of slippery roads

In high temperatures, road surfaces can become soft and if it rains after a dry spell it may become slippery. Be mindful of breaking distances and drive at the recommended speed at all times.

Reduce sun glare

Wearing sunglasses and using the sun visor in your car can help to  prevent sunlight from dazzling you on the road but in extreme cases of glare find a safe spot to pull over.

Car maintenance

Car maintenance is important whatever the weather but in the summer engines are more prone to overheat  so make sure you regularly inspect the coolant level.

Keep your windscreen clean as this will prevent sun glare.

Happy driving! Pip Pip
