2020 - The Year Of The Electric Car

If all of the reports, rumours and excited whisperings are true, 2020 will go down in history as the year the electric vehicle arrived in style. With a host of exciting vehicle launches set for 2020 we’ve picked our top 4.

Which will you be coveting?

Volkswagen ID.3

The first of Volkswagen’s ID.3s will be on the UK’s roads mid-2020. Available to order now the ID.3 is Volkswagen’s first electric car to be built on a bespoke pure-electric platform and will be the first of many electric options from VW.

The first edition has a reported 30,000 orders already and with “looks of a Golf and space of a Passat” and a range of between 186 and 261 miles we can see why.

BMW iX3

BMW are no strangers to introducing electric cars to their range. They were trail blazing with the i3 and i8 but the launch if the iX3 this year is the first in a while and an important launch – the manufacturer’s first all electric SUV.

So far we know that the iX3 will be powered by a 70kWh battery and range should be in the region of 249 miles. BMW has also said the iX3 will be able to deal with the most rapid chargers as it will be able to charge at a rate of 150kW.

The iX3 will be based on the widely applauded X3 so promises to have all of the style, space and drive quality of one of BMW’s favourites.

Exact release dates for the UK are still to be confirmed.

Mini Electric

When it launches in March 2020, the Mini Electric will be the BMW Group's cheapest full EV, costing less than the BMW i3. WLTP range will be between 124 and 144 miles, and at a 50kW DC fast-charging station, the car can get an 80 per cent charge from zero in just 35 minutes. The 5.5-inch colour digital dash is a highlight, as is the central 6.5-inch touchscreen and optional Harmon Kardon sound system.

A new Mini always generates excitement and the Mini Electric is no exception!

Volvo XC40 Recharge

Volvo’s XC40 crossover is the manufacturer’s best selling car in the UK so it makes sense that the XC40 Recharge is going to be the first all-electric production Volvo.

The four-wheel-drive will have two 201bhp electric motors, one on each axle and power comes from a 78kWh underfloor battery producing a WLTP-certified range of 248 miles. Volvo claims a 150kW DC fast-charger will deliver an 80 per cent charge in 40 minutes. It is expected to go on sale in late 2020.

An XC40 T5 petrol-electric plug-in hybrid will also launch in early 2020.
